The GMDN was funded by the European community. Its translation into all languages of the community is underway, again thanks to EU funding. The consideration for public funding should naturally be the free availability of GMDN to promote its use. This is a position long advocated by regulatory agencies (including Afssaps), who see a way to remove the financial barrier to its use by an industry largely made up of small and medium enterprises with limited resources and having not need a large number of classification codes.
question is how can this free provision in respect of intellectual property, and avoid a "looting" of that list.
The proposed solution is the provision of single words GMDN of a website through a search engine. This solution is already available (in English) on the website of the Department of Health HONK KONG: http://search.mdco.gov.hk/english/sd/sd_gmdn/sd_gmdn.php
